If a guy recently looked down after making eye contact with you then you might be wondering why and what it might mean about the way that he feels about you.

This post will show you a number of reasons why he might look down after eye contact and why other guys might do the same in the future.

So, what does it mean when a guy looks down after eye contact? It could be a sign that he is attracted to you especially if he only seems to do it with you, he glances at you a lot and he shows other signs of attraction. He might also be nervous, not want to come across as being threatening or he might do it naturally with everyone.

There are actually a number of reasons why a guy might look down after making eye contact and there are a number of things that you can consider when trying to understand why.

Why a guy will look down after eye contact

Each of the different reasons why a guy will look down after making eye contact with you will likely come with a number of clues in the way that he does it and in the body language that he shows.

In the following sections, I will show you a number of reasons why a guy will look down after making eye contact, the signs to look for and the things to consider.

He is attracted to you

The reason that a guy might look down after making eye contact with you could be that he is attracted to you.

This would be more likely if he also smiles when he does it, he only seems to do it with you, he glances at you a lot and if his body language is different around you compared to when he is with other people.

If he is attracted to you then it would be likely that he would show signs of being attracted to you, when he is around you, such as:

  • Keeping his focus on you when multiple people are talking
  • Pointing his feet at you (people often point their feet at people that they are attracted to)
  • Adjusting his appearance when he sees you
  • Asking you the most questions when in a group with you
  • Touching you a lot
  • Looking in your direction a lot and smiling or quickly looking away when you notice
  • Talking to you with a deeper voice than he does with other people
  • Standing closer to you than he does with other people
  • Watching you and getting anxious when you are around other men
  • Getting defensive when other men are with you both

There are more signs of attraction that a guy might show around you and I have written about more of them in this blog post.

He is being submissive

Looking down after eye contact can often be a submissive gesture and a guy might look down because he is being submissive or he is nervous.

It would be more likely that he looked down because he was being submissive if you are in a higher position than him in some way, you come across as threatening or if he seems to have a shy personality.

He didn’t want to seem threatening

Often, when people make eye contact, they will look down in order to avoid coming across as being threatening or to avoid making it feel awkward when you hold eye contact with each other for a long time.

If that is why he did it then it would be more likely that he would have only looked at you once and that he wouldn’t show many other signs of attraction when he is around you.

He does it naturally

It could be the case that he has a habit of looking down when he makes eye contact with people.

This would be more likely if he also seems to do it with other people and if he shows the same body language around other people as he does with you.

If he does seem to do it naturally then it could still be the case that he is attracted to you. If he is then it would be likely that he would show some signs of attraction when he is around you.

Consider the way that he reacts upon seeing you

When trying to understand how he feels about you and why he looks down after eye contact it would help to consider other things that he does when he sees you.

If he reacts to seeing you by noticeably changing his body language then it would make it more likely that he has particularly good or bad feelings about you.

If he reacts to seeing you by doing things such as:

  • Adjusting his appearance
  • Adjusting his posture
  • Facing towards you (especially with his feet)
  • Moving closer to you
  • Having more dilated pupils

Then it would make it more likely that he is attracted to you.

Consider how he interacts with other people

It would also help to compare the way that he interacts with other people with how he interacts with you.

If he shows the same body language around other people and he also seems to look down when making eye contact with other people then it would make it more likely that he does it naturally due to his personality.

Whereas, if he only does it with you and his body language is different around you, then it would make it more likely that he is attracted to you. That is assuming that he changes it in a way that suggests attraction.

Look for a number of body language clues

When considering what his body language might be showing it would help to consider multiple signs at the same time.

The reason for this is that a single body language sign can have multiple different meanings. This can cause single body language signs to be less reliable on their own.

Whereas, if he shows multiple body language signs that all point at the same meaning then it would make it more likely that he is showing them for that reason.

If you want to learn more about body language, a book I would recommend would be The Definitive Book of Body Language (on Amazon). It shows you how to interpret body language and understand people's true intentions.
