If a girl recently looked at you then looked away when you looked at her then you might be wondering why and what it means about how she feels about you.

This post will show you a number of reasons why she might have done it and why other girls might look at you then look away when you notice.

So, what does it mean when a girl looks at me then looks away when I notice? It could be a sign of attraction especially if she does it multiple times and she shows other signs of attraction around you. She could also have randomly caught eye contact with you in that moment, she might have thought you were looking at her or she might have been annoyed with you.

Since there are actually a number of reasons why she might have looked at you then looked away when you noticed it would be helpful to consider the context of how it happened and the body language she showed.

Why a girl will look at you then look away when you notice

Each of the different reasons why she might have done it will likely come with a number of clues in her body language and in the way that she did it.

In the following sections, I will mention a number of reasons why she might have done it, the signs to look for and the things to consider.

She likes you

The reason that she looked away when you noticed could have been that you caught her checking you out.

This would be more likely if she glances at you a lot and if she doesn’t seem to also do it with other people.

If she did do it due to being attracted to you then it would be likely that she would show other signs of being attracted to you, in her body language, when she is around you.

These signs could include:

  • Having dilated pupils when looking at you
  • Pointing her feet at you (people point their feet at people that they are attracted to)
  • Positioning herself to be nearer to you
  • Brushing her hair to the side when she is around you
  • Ventilating her hair when she is around you
  • Laughing and looking to see if you are also laughing
  • Adjusting her appearance when she sees you

She thought that you were looking at her

The reason that she was looking at you could have been that she thought that you were looking at her.

This would be more likely if she started looking at you after you had been looking at her yourself or after you had at least been looking in her direction. It would also be less likely that she would have shown signs of attraction towards you and her body language may have been showing distancing behavior away from you.

She was just looking in your direction

It could have been the case that she was just looking in your direction and you caught her doing it then she naturally looked away when she realized.

If this was the case then it might have taken her a moment to realize that you were looking at her since she wasn’t actually looking at you. She would also likely have shown neutral looking body language towards you.

She was thinking

It could be the case that you caught her looking at you while she was thinking about something.

This would be more likely if she was showing neutral body language towards you and if she didn’t look away straight away. It would also be less likely that she would do it after you had changed location.

She was annoyed with you

It might have been the case that she was annoyed with you.

This would be more likely if she did it after you had recently had an argument with each other or if you had recently done something that would have annoyed her.

If she was annoyed with you then she would likely have shown other signs of it in her body language by doing things such as:

  • Squinting at you
  • Tensing her jaw when looking at you
  • Tightening her lips when your talking
  • Crossing her arms when she sees you
  • Avoiding you

Consider how she reacts to seeing you

When trying to understand why she looked away when you looked at her it would help to consider how she reacts to seeing you.

If she reacts to seeing you by noticeably changing her body language then it would be more likely that she has good or bad feelings about you depending on how she changes it.

If she reacts to seeing you by doing things such as:

  • Brushing her hair to the side
  • Pointing her feet at you
  • Positioning herself to be nearer to you
  • Adjusting her appearance
  • Sitting more upright and uncrossing her arms

Then it would be more likely that she was looking at you because she likes you.

Whereas, if she reacts to seeing you by doing things such as:

  • Squinting
  • Crossing her arms
  • Tensing her jaw and lips
  • Pointing her feet away from you
  • Distancing herself

Then it would be more likely that she was annoyed with you when she was looking at you.

Consider when and where she looked at you

The timing and location of when and where she did it would also be a useful thing to consider.

If she did it while you were both at a party then it would make it more likely that she was doing it due to attraction.

Whereas, if she did it while at school or work then it would make it more likely that she either was thinking and looking at you, thinking that you were looking at her or that she was attracted to you. It would help to consider how often she does it, if she does it to others and if she shows signs of attraction or not liking you.

If she did it in multiple locations then it would be more likely that she is attracted to you or that she thinks that you keep looking at her.

Think about her normal body language

It would also be helpful to consider what her normal body language is like and how it compares to how it is when she is around you.

If she also looks at other people a lot and she shows similar body language when she is around other people as she does when she is around you then it would be more likely that she does it naturally.

Whereas, if she specifically looks at you a lot and she changes her body language when she notices you then it would be more likely that she is attracted to you, is annoyed with you or that she thinks that you’re looking at her.

Consider multiple signs

When considering what her body language could be suggesting it would help to consider multiple aspects of it at a time.

She could have been showing a single sign of attraction for reasons other than attraction. This can make single body language signs unreliable.

Whereas, if she was showing a cluster of body language signs of attraction then it would make it more likely that she was actually attracted to you.

If you want to learn more about body language, a book I would recommend would be The Definitive Book of Body Language (on Amazon). It shows you how to interpret body language and understand people's true intentions.
