If you have recently noticed a guy stare at you when you were walking past him then you’re probably wondering why he might have done it.

This post will show you a number of reasons why he might have stared at you when walking past you and help you to understand what it means if other guys do it in the future.

So, why would a guy stare at you when walking past you? If he doesn’t show negative body language signals then it would be likely that he is attracted to you. Alternatively, he might do it because he feels threatened in some way, he is being threatening, he’s annoyed with you or he might feel self-conscious.

Since there are a number of reasons why a guy might stare at you when walking past you it is important to consider the body language signals that he shows when doing it.

By doing so you’ll be able to get a better understanding as to why he might stare at you when walking past you.

Reasons why a guy will stare at you when walking past you

Each of the different reasons why a guy will stare at you when walking past you will likely come with a number of clues in his body language.

Below, I will mention a number of reasons why a guy will stare at you when walking past you and the body language signals that you should expect to see with them.

He has a crush on you

The reason that he might have stared at you when walking past you could be that he found you to be attractive.

This would be especially likely to be the reason if he also looked you up and down and if he didn’t show any negative body language signals.

It can be quite difficult to tell if he was attracted to you based solely on the time period that he was walking past you.

However, if he was attracted to you, then it would be likely that he would have shown some body language signals of attraction which could include:

  • Having more dilated pupils than usual when looking at you
  • Adjusting his posture so that he is more upright and not slouching when he first noticed you
  • Pulling the shoulders back and pushing the chest outwards slightly
  • Quickly looking away when you noticed him staring at you
  • Smiling when you were looking at him
  • Mirroring your body language
  • Showing signs of nervousness when walking past you
  • Walking slightly closer to you

If you have seen the guy more than once then there would likely be many more signs of attraction that he would show you in his body language that I have talked about in the past here.

He feels self-conscious

The reason that he stared at you might actually be that he thought you were staring at him and it made him feel self-conscious.

If that was the case then it would be likely that he would have shown some signs of nervousness in his body language by doing things such as:

  • Rubbing the face, arms or neck
  • Touching the front of the neck
  • Scratching the back of the neck
  • Distancing himself from you
  • Walking faster

He feels threatened

It could also be the case that the reason that he stared at you when he was walking past you was that he felt threatened by you in some way.

This would be more likely if you were showing negative signs in your body language by doing this such as squinting, clenching the fists, tightening the jaw, tightening the lips and tightening the eyebrows.

If he was staring at you because he felt threatened then it would be likely that he would have shown similar body language signals towards you.

He’s being threatening

The reason that he was staring at you might also be that he was being threatening.

If that was the case then it would be likely that he would have done things such as:

  • Clench the fists
  • Clench the jaw
  • Squint
  • Tighten the eyebrows when looking at you
  • Show the teeth
  • Have redness of the face
  • Have increased visibility of the veins

He’s observing to see if you’re a threat

When a person is walking past a person that they don’t know they will often look at them to observe whether or not they are a threat.

The reason that he stared at you might be that he was observing to see if you were a threat.

If that was the case then it would be likely that he would have looked at your hands first and that he would have tried to avoid walking in your path.

He’s annoyed with you

If you know him then the reason that he stared at you while walking past you could be that he was annoyed with you.

If that is the case then it would be likely that something would have recently happened between you both that would cause him to be annoyed with you.

It would also be likely that he would have shown negative signals when walking past you such as squinting, tightening the lips and tensing the jaw.

Other ways that he would show that he is annoyed with you, in general, could include:

  • Crossing the arms and legs when he sees you
  • Pointing the feet away from you
  • Distancing himself from you
  • Giving you short answers
  • Avoiding talking to you

He wants to be more than just friends

If he is your friend and he stared at you when walking past you then it could be the case that he wants to be more than just friends with you.

If that is the case then it would be likely that he would have shown the signs of attraction when walking past you mentioned in the first section above.

It would also be likely that he would show signs of attraction when around you that I have talked about in the past here.

Consider your relationship with him

When trying to figure out why he might have stared at you while walking past you it would be helpful to consider the relationship that you have with him.

If he was a guy that you haven’t met before then it could either be that he was attracted to you, he was being self-conscious, he was being threatening or that he thought that you were. It would be necessary to consider the body language signals that he was showing to get a better idea of which reason it was.

Whereas, if you have spoken to him before then it would be more likely that he either did it because he was attracted to you or because he was annoyed with you. If he was attracted to you then it would be likely that he would show it in his body language when he is around you.

Consider the way that he reacts upon first seeing you

It would also be helpful to consider the way that he reacts to you when he first sees you.

If he adjusts his posture so that he is more upright, positions himself to be nearer to you, mirrors your body language, uncrosses his arms, shows more dilated pupils and raises his eyebrows and smiles at you then it would be likely that he is attracted to you.

Consider clusters of body language

When trying to make sense of what a guy’s body language might be suggesting it would be helpful to consider the body language signals in terms of clusters of signals.

This means that you should look for multiple body language signals that all point towards the same thing such as attraction.

The reason for that is that single body language signals will often have a number of different meanings which makes them unreliable on their own.
