If a guy has been pretending not you like you then you might be wondering why and what it might actually mean about the way that he feels about you.

This post will show you a number of reasons why he might pretend not to like you and why other guys might do the same in the future.

So, why would a guy pretend not to like you? It could be that he is attracted to you but he is nervous, not looking for a relationship or he doesn’t think you like him which would be more likely if he shows some subconscious signs of attraction. He might act that way naturally or it could also be a sign that he is not actually attracted to you.

There are actually a number of reasons why a guy might pretend not to like you and there are a number of things that you can consider when trying to understand why he does it.

Why a guy will pretend not to like you

Each of the different reasons why a guy will pretend not to like you will likely come with a number of clues in the way that he does it and the body language he shows.

Below, I will mention a number of reasons why a guy will pretend not to like you, the signs to look for and the things to consider.

He is attracted to you

Sometimes, when a guy is attracted to a girl, he will pretend not to like her and this could be why he is pretending not to like you.

The reason that he might pretend not to like you might be that he is attracted to you but he is nervous and he doesn’t want to say something that you won’t like or he is worried about being rejected.

It would be more likely that he pretends not to like you despite being attracted to you if he only seems to act that way with you and he shows different body language around you compared to when he is with his other friends.

If he is attracted to you then it would be likely that he would show some signs of attraction, when he is around you, such as:

  • Holding prolonged eye contact with you
  • Asking you the most questions
  • Keeping his focus on you when multiple people are talking
  • Glancing at you a lot
  • Adjusting his appearance when he sees you
  • Touching you a lot
  • Standing closer to you than he does with other people
  • Pointing his feet at you (people often point their feet at people that they are attracted to)
  • Watching you and getting anxious when you are around other men
  • Getting defensive when other men are with you both
  • Having dilated pupils when looking at you (people’s pupils will often become more dilated when looking at someone that they are attracted to)

There are more signs of attraction that a guy might show around you and I have written about more of them in this blog post.

He is not attracted to you

It could also be the case that he actually does it because he is not attracted to you and he doesn’t want to give you the impression that he is.

This would be more likely if he only seems to pretend not to like you, if he started doing it after you showed interest in him and if he doesn’t seem to act in a similar way with his other friends.

If it is the case that he is not attracted to you then it could be the case that he shows distancing body language such as:

  • Avoiding eye contact
  • Standing further away from you, than he does with his other friends, when talking to you
  • Pointing his feet away from you
  • Distancing himself from you
  • Smiling with a closed mouth

He acts that way naturally

It might be the case that he actually just acts that way naturally.

This would be more likely if he also seems to act in a similar way with his other friends and if he shows the same body language around them as he does with you.

If he does seem to do it naturally then it could still be the case that he is attracted to you. If he is then it would be more likely that he would show signs of being attracted to you when he is around you.

He is not looking for a relationship

It might be the case that he is attracted to you but he is not looking for a relationship.

This would be more likely if he seems to show some signs of attraction but he has mentioned that he doesn’t want a girlfriend in the past or if he is moving away soon.

It might also be the case that he does actually have a girlfriend which is causing him to show less interest in you.

He is annoyed with you

The reason that he is acting that way might be that he is annoyed with you or something else.

This would be more likely if he only started to act more distant after something happened that would cause him to be annoyed with you.

If he is annoyed with you then he might show signs of it by doing things such as:

  • Squinting
  • Smiling only at the mouth
  • Avoiding eye contact
  • Facing away from you
  • Standing further away from you than he usually does
  • Having tight lips around you

He thinks that you do not like him

It could also be the case that he is attracted to you but he thinks that you do not like him yourself.

This would be more likely if he seems to only act that way with you, he shows some signs of attraction around you and if you have not shown any interest in him, yourself, in the past.

Consider the way that he reacts to seeing you

When trying to understand why he pretends not to like you it would help to consider the way that he reacts upon seeing you.

If he reacts to seeing you by noticeably changing his body language then it would make it more likely that he does it because he has particularly good or bad feelings about you.

If he reacts to seeing you by doing things such as:

  • Adjusting his appearance
  • Adjusting his posture
  • Facing towards you (especially with his feet)
  • Holding eye contact with you
  • Moving closer to you
  • His pupils become more dilated

Then it would make it more likely that he is attracted to you.

Whereas, if he reacts to seeing you by doing things such as:

  • Squinting
  • Facing away from you
  • Smiling with a closed mouth
  • Tightening his lips
  • Distancing himself
  • Avoiding eye contact

Then it would make it more likely that he either does it because he is not attracted to you or he is annoyed with you.

Consider how he interacts with other people

It would also help to compare the way that he interacts with you with how he interacts with other people.

If he shows the same body language around you as he does around other people then it would make it more likely that he acts that way naturally.

Whereas, if he only seems to do it with you and his body language is different with you then it would make it more likely that he has good or bad feelings about you depending on the way that he changes his body language.

Look for a number of body language signs

When thinking about what his body language might be showing it would help to consider multiple signs at the same time.

This is because a single body language sign can have many different meanings. This makes single body language signs less reliable on their own.

Whereas, if he shows a number of signs that all suggest the same thing then it would make it more likely that he shows them for that particular reason.

If you want to learn more about body language, a book I would recommend would be The Definitive Book of Body Language (on Amazon). It shows you how to interpret body language and understand people's true intentions.
