If a guy that you know tends to wave at you then you might be wondering why he does it.
This post will help you figure out why he tends to wave at you and help you to figure out why other guys might do it in the future.
So, what does it mean when a guy waves at you? A guy waving at you might mean that he likes you if he only does it to you and he shows other signs of attraction around you. He might also be happy to see you, letting you know that he sees you and it would likely be a sign that he considers you a friend.
Since there are a number of reasons why a guy will wave at you it would be helpful to consider the body language that he shows when he is around you.
By doing so you’ll be able to get a better understanding of what his feelings towards you are like.
Reasons why a guy will wave at you
Each of the different reasons why a guy will wave at you will likely come with a number of clues in his body language.
Below, I will mention a number of reasons why a guy will wave at you and the body language signals to expect to see with them.
He’s attracted to you
The reason that a guy might wave at you could be that he is attracted to you.
This would be more likely to be the case if he only seems to do it to you and he changes his body language when he first notices you in ways that will be mentioned below.
With that being said, a guy waving at you in and of itself isn’t a strong signal of attraction. So, unless he shows multiple other body language signals of attraction it would be unreliable to conclude that he is attracted to you based solely on him waving at you.
However, if he is attracted to you then it would be likely that he would show it in his body language by doing things such as:
- Having more dilated pupils than is normal when talking to you
- Adopting a more upright posture when first noticing you
- Making adjustments to his hair or clothing when first noticing you
- Talking to you more than other people that are with you both
- Keeping his focus on you when there are lots of people talking
- Looking in your direction a lot and then quickly looking away when you notice or smiling
- Holding eye contact with you for longer than normal
- Mirroring your body language
- Talking to you with a deeper voice than he does to other people
- Aiming his feet at you when he is around you
- Sticking around and showing signs of being anxious when you’re talking to other men
- Standing close to you when talking to you
- Asking your friends about you
He’s happy to see you
The reason that he might have waved at you could simply be that he is happy to see you.
The reason that he was happy to see you could be that he is attracted to you in which case he would also likely show signs of attraction when around you.
Alternatively, he might have been hoping to see you for some other reason such as enjoying spending time with you or because there was something that he needed you to help him with.
If he did wave at you for this reason then it would be likely that he would have shown some signs of excitement when he saw you by doing things such as opening the mouth more widely, opening the eyes wide, speaking at a higher pitch and bouncing the feet.
He’s mirroring you
When a guy is trying to fit in with a certain group of people he will actually, subconsciously begin to mirror their behavior.
This is because it will help him to get accepted by the group.
If he tends to hang out with the same people as you and you have waved at him in a similar way in the past then it would be likely that he would have waved at you due to mirroring you.
Mirroring you could also be a sign that he is attracted to you. If that is the case then it would be likely that he would also show other signs of attraction when he is around you.
If he was mirroring you when he waved at you then it would be likely that he would mirror you in other ways as well by doing things such as:
- Mirroring your smile
- Mirroring your hand gestures
- Mirroring your facial gestures
- Standing or sitting with the same stance as you
- Talking at a similar pitch as you
He’s letting you know that he sees you
If he is your friend then the reason that he waved at you could be that he was letting you know that he saw you.
If that is the case then he probably would have done it while being with other people or being occupied with something else and not being able to speak to you.
He considers you a friend
The reason that he might have waved at you could be that he considers you a friend.
If that is the case then it would be likely that he would wave at his other friends when he sees them and that his body language would be the same around you as it is around other people.
Consider how he reacts when he sees you
When trying to understand how he might feel about you it would be helpful to consider the way that he reacts when he first sees you.
If, when he first sees you, he tends to raise his eyebrows and smile, point his feet at you, sit or stand with a more upright posture, hold prolonged eye contact with you and adjust his clothing or hair then it would be likely that he is attracted to you.
Consider how he interacts with other people
When trying to understand why he might have waved at you it would be helpful to consider the way that he interacts with other people.
If he tends to wave when he sees his other friends and he shows the same body language around them as he does around you then it would be likely that he considers you a friend.
Whereas, if he tends to only wave at you and he changes his body language when he notices you in a way that signals attraction then it would be likely that he is attracted to you.
Look for multiple body language signals
When trying to make sense of why he waved at you it would be helpful to consider multiple body language signals when you do it.
There are usually a number of different reasons that a guy will show a single body language signal. This means that it would be unreliable to draw a conclusion on his feelings towards you based on one body language signal.
Whereas, if he shows multiple signs of attraction in his body language then it would be much more likely that he actually is attracted to you since there are usually only one or two reasons that he will show a cluster of body language signals.
What does it mean if a shy guy waves at you? It would mean that he might be attracted to you in which case he would probably show other signs of attraction in his body language. Alternatively, it could just mean that he is glad to see you in which case he would likely show positive body language signals towards you.
If you want to learn more about body language, a book I would recommend would be The Definitive Book of Body Language (on Amazon). It shows you how to interpret body language and understand people's true intentions.
