If you recently noticed a guy staring at you and he quickly looked away when you noticed then you might be wondering why he did it.

This post will help you understand why he did it and why other guys might do it as well in the future.

So, what does it mean when a guy stares at you then quickly looks away? If he also shows signs of attraction in his body language then it would be likely that he quickly looked away because he finds you attractive. It could also be that he thought that you were looking at him, he was annoyed with you, he was just looking in your general direction or he might have been thinking about you.

Since there are a number of reasons why a guy might stare at you then quickly look away it is important to consider the body language that he showed and the context in which he did it.

By doing so you will be able to get a better understanding of why he would stare at you then look away and the way that he feels about you.

Reasons why a guy will stare at you then look away

Each of the different reasons why a guy will stare at you then look away will likely come with a number of clues in his body language and in the way that he does it.

Below, I will mention a number of reasons why a guy will stare at you then quickly look away and the signs to look for with them.

He was attracted to you

The reason that he did it could be that he was checking you out.

This would be more likely if he did it multiple times and if he kept his focus on you while one of you were moving.

If he was staring at you because he was attracted to you then the reason that he quickly looked away would be that you caught him and he didn’t want you to realize that he was looking at you.

If he was looking at you because he was attracted to you then it would be likely that he would show other signs of attraction in his body language and behavior such as:

  • Having more dilated pupils
  • Pointing his feet at you
  • Positioning himself to be nearer to you
  • Sitting or standing with a straighter posture when he notices you
  • Mirroring your own body language
  • Adjusting his appearance when he notices you
  • Uncrossing his arms when he notices you
  • Watching you when you’re with other men
  • Laughing and looking to see if you’re laughing

It would be helpful to see more than one sign of attraction to be sure since he might show a single sign for multiple reasons.

He thought that you were looking at him

The reason that he was looking at you could be that he thought that you were looking at him.

This would be more likely to have been the reason if you had been looking at him or if you had looked at him in the past.

If he did stare at you because he thought that you were looking at him then he might have shown signs of uncertainty in his body language which could have included:

  • Rubbing his face, arms, neck or legs
  • Fidgeting
  • Tapping his fingers and feet
  • Self-hugging
  • Wringing his hands

He was just looking in your direction

It could be the case that he was actually just looking in your direction but he quickly looked away because he noticed that you thought he was looking at you.

If that was the case then it would be less likely that he would have done it more than once unless he was looking at something that he was particularly interested in near you. It would also be likely that he would have shown neutral body language towards you unless he had positive or negative feelings about the thing or person that he was actually looking at.

He was thinking

It might also be that he was looking in your direction while he was thinking about something unrelated to you.

If that was the case then it would be likely that he would have been showing neutral body language towards you. It would also be less likely that he would have looked in your direction more than once.

He was annoyed with you

If you knew him then it could be the case that he stared at you then looked away because he was annoyed with you or because he thought that you were annoyed with him.

If that was the case then it would be likely that something would have recently happened between you both that would cause you to be annoyed with each other.

If he was annoyed with you then he might also have shown it in his body language in other ways as well such as:

  • Squinting at you
  • Crossing his arms when looking at you
  • Tightening his lips when looking at you
  • Tensing his jaw when looking at you
  • Furrowing his eyebrows when looking at you
  • Pointing his feet away from you

He isn’t interested in you

The reason that he looked away quickly could actually be that he is not interested in you.

He might have been looking at you for a reason other than being attracted to you then he looked away quickly because he didn’t want to give you the impression that he is attracted to you.

If that was the case then it would be likely that he would have not shown any signs of attraction and he might also have shown distancing behaviors such as pointing his feet away from you or standing further away from you.

He was looking at you randomly

It could be the case that he was randomly looking in your direction and you happened to notice him looking at you at that time.

If that was the case then it would be more likely that he would have shown neutral body language to you and that he wouldn’t have looked at you multiple times.

Someone told him something about you

If he hangs out with people that you know then it might be the case that he was looking at you because they told him something about you.

This would be more likely if he was doing it while he was with people that you know and if they were looking at you as well.

Consider where it happened

When trying to understand why he looked at you then quickly looked away it would be helpful to consider where it happened.

If he stared at you then looked away at a party or a social even then it would be more likely that he did it because of being attracted to you. However, he might have done it for a different reason which is why it would be helpful to consider the body language that he was showing.

If he did it in a more formal setting then it would be more likely that he was thinking and looking in your direction or that he was thinking about you. Again, he still might have done it for a different reason depending on the body language and how many times he did it.

Consider the relationship you have with him

It would also be helpful to consider the type of relationship that you have with him.

If you didn’t know him then it would be more likely that he was attracted to you, looking in your general direction or he might have thought that you were looking at him. It would help to consider whether or not he looked at you repeatedly and whether or not he was showing other signs of attraction.

If you do know him then it would be more likely that he was either thinking about you, annoyed with you, he thought you were annoyed with him or that he was just looking in your direction.

Think about how he reacts to seeing you

When trying to understand why he stared at you then quickly looked away it would help to think about the way that he reacts to seeing you.

If he reacts to seeing you by noticeably changing his body language and behavior then it would be more likely that he was looking at you specifically and that he wasn’t just looking in your direction.

If he reacts to seeing you by doing things such as:

  • Raising his eyebrows
  • Smiling
  • Adjusting his appearance
  • Uncrossing his arms
  • Standing or sitting more upright
  • Having more dilated pupils
  • Pointing his feet at you

Then it would be more likely that he was attracted to you.

Whereas, if he reacts to seeing you by doing things such as:

  • Squinting at you
  • Crossing his arms
  • Pointing his feet away from you
  • Tightening his lips
  • Tensing his jaw
  • Moving further away from you

Then it would be more likely that he was annoyed with you.

Think about how he interacts with other people

When trying to understand why he did it comparing the way that he interacts with others with how he interacts around you would be helpful.

If he also tends to stare at other people and he shows the same body language around other people then it would be more likely that he was just looking in your general direction or that he tends to stare at people.

Whereas, if he only seems to stare at you and he changes his body language around you then it would be more likely that he was attracted to you, annoyed with you or that he thinks that you were annoyed with him.

Look for multiple signs in his body language

While thinking about what his body language might be suggesting it would be helpful to consider multiple aspects of it.

He could show a single body language sign for a number of different reasons making it hard to accurately assess the exact reason that he is showing it.

Whereas, if he shows multiple body language signs of the same thing then it would be more likely that he is showing them for that reason in particular.

If you want to learn more about body language, a book I would recommend would be The Definitive Book of Body Language (on Amazon). It shows you how to interpret body language and understand people's true intentions.
