If a girl has been acting shy around you then you might be wondering why and what it might mean about the way that she feels about you.

This post will show you a number of reasons why she might act shy around you and why other girls might do it as well in the future.

So, what does it mean when a girl acts shy around you? It could be a sign that she likes you especially if she only does it with you, she doesn’t have any reason to not like you and she shows other signs of attraction around you. She could also have some social anxiety, think you don’t like her, not be interested in you or she might not like people that you hang out with.

Since there are a number of reasons why a girl might be shy around you it would help to consider the context of how she does it and the body language that she shows.

Why a girl will get shy around you

Each of the different reasons why she acts shy around you will likely come with a number of clues in the way that she does it and in the body language that she shows.

Below, I will show a number of reasons why a girl will act shy around you, the signs to look for and the things to consider.

She likes you

It could be the case that she likes you and she doesn’t want to make herself look bad in front of you and it causes her to get shy around you.

This would be more likely if she only gets shy around you, she doesn’t have any reason not to like you or if her friends talk positively about her to you or they ask what you think of her.

If she does like you then it would be likely that she would show other signs of liking you when she is around you such as:

  • Brushing her hair to the side
  • Stroking her hair while talking to you
  • Holding prolonged eye contact with you
  • Having dilated pupils when looking at you
  • Asking your friends about you
  • Laughing and looking at you
  • Laughing a lot at the things that you say
  • Standing closer to you than she does with other people
  • Adjusting her appearance when she sees you
  • Pointing her feet at you
  • Positioning herself to be nearer to you

She has some social anxiety

The reason that she gets shy around you could be that she has some social anxiety.

This would be more likely if she also gets shy around other people that are not her close friends and if she shows the same body language around them as with you.

It could still be the case that she is attracted to you. If she is then she would likely show some signs of attraction around you that she doesn’t with other people.

She thinks you don’t like her

The reason that she gets shy around you could be that she thinks that you don’t like her.

This would be more likely if you have argued with her in the past or if you haven’t shown any interest in her.

If she does think that you don’t like her then it would also be likely that she would show distancing behaviors around you such as by standing further away from you, avoiding you and avoiding eye contact.

She is not interested in you

It could also be the case that she gets shy around you because she is not interested in you.

This would be more likely if she used to act normal around you but she started to act shy after you showed interest in her.

If she is not interested in you then she would also likely show other signs of it in her body language when around you by doing things such as:

  • Squinting when she sees you
  • Crossing her arms when she sees you
  • Pointing her feet away from you
  • Avoiding eye contact
  • Standing further away from you than she does with other people
  • Positioning herself not to be near you
  • Giving you short answers
  • Having tight lips when you’re talking to her

She doesn’t like someone that you are with

The reason that she does it could be that she doesn’t like someone else that you tend to hang out with.

This would be more likely if she doesn’t always get shy around you, she only gets shy around you when certain people are with you both and if she shows signs of not liking those people.

Consider how she interacts with other people

When trying to understand why she gets shy around you it would help to compare the way that she interacts with you with how she interacts with other people.

If she also gets shy around other people and she shows the same body language and behavior with them as with you then it would be more likely that she has some social anxiety.

Whereas, if she only gets shy around you and her body language is different around you then she might like you, not like you or think you don’t like her. It would help to consider in what way her body language changes when she is around you.

Consider how she reacts to seeing you

Thinking about the way that she reacts upon seeing you could also help in understanding why she is shy around you.

If she changes her body language and behavior upon seeing you it would be more likely she gets shy due to having good or bad feelings about you.

If she reacts to seeing you by doing things such as:

  • Brushing her hair to the side
  • Adjusting her appearance
  • Holding eye contact and watching you as you enter the room
  • Positioning herself to be nearer to you
  • Pointing her feet at you
  • Straightening her posture and uncrossing her arms

Then it would be more likely that she gets shy due to being attracted to you.

Whereas, if she reacts by doing things such as:

  • Squinting
  • Crossing her arms
  • Stopping smiling
  • Avoiding eye contact
  • Pointing her feet away from you
  • Distancing herself

Then it would be more likely that she gets shy due to not liking you.

Consider when and where she is shy

Considering the timing and location of when and where she gets shy could also help.

If she gets shy only around you then it would be more likely that she does it specifically because she has good or bad feelings about you. It would help to consider her body language and previous interactions with her.

If she only does it at certain times then it would be more likely that she gets shy around you because she doesn’t like certain people that you are with or she feels uncomfortable around them.

Look for a cluster of signs

When considering the body language signs that she shows around you it would help to consider multiple body language signs at the same time.

This is because single body language signs will often have many different possible meanings. This can make body language signs unreliable on their own.

Whereas, if she shows multiple body language signs that all suggest the same thing then it would be more likely that she shows them for that specific reason.

If you want to learn more about body language, a book I would recommend would be The Definitive Book of Body Language (on Amazon). It shows you how to interpret body language and understand people's true intentions.
