If someone was recently closing their eyes while talking to you, this post will show you likely reasons why and what would make each of them more likely.

So, what does it mean when someone closes their eyes while talking? Likely reasons why someone will close their eyes while talking are that they are anxious, they are trying to think or remember something, they are lying, they do it naturally, or that they just have something in or blocking their eyes.

There are actually a number of possible reasons why someone will close their eyes while talking to you but there are some things to consider to help figure out the main reason.

What does it mean when someone closes their eyes while talking?

Below are likely causes and what would make them more likely.

They are anxious

The cause could be that they were anxious. This could be because they had some social anxiety, they were talking to a large group of people or because they were talking about something that made them anxious. It would be more likely that they were anxious if they were showing other signs of being anxious such as rubbing their arms, fidgeting a lot or speaking with a high-pitched voice.

They are thinking or remembering something

It might also be the case that they were trying to remember or think about something. This would be more likely if they were only closing their eyes while trying to remember something or when they were thinking about what to say.

They are lying

Closing the eyes can often be a sign that someone is lying. This would be more likely if they closed their eyes at the exact moment that they said something that might have been a lie and if they were doing other things such as avoiding eye contact or rubbing behind their neck. It is important to note though that closing the eyes is only a sign of lying and it does not necessarily mean that they were lying.

They do it naturally

It might also be the case that they close their eyes a lot naturally. This would be more likely if they were showing normal behavior otherwise and if they also interact with other people in a similar way to how they interact with you.

Attraction

It might be the case that they were anxious because they were attracted to you. This would be more likely if they were showing other signs of being attracted to you such as looking at you when laughing, standing the closest to you, following you around or finding reasons to be near you.

Something in their eyes

It might also be the case that there was sunlight in their eyes or that their eyes were sore.

Consider other body language signs they were showing

To help figure out why they were closing their eyes, it would help to consider what other body language signs they were showing. If they also did things such as rub their arms and neck, fidget a lot or talk in a high-pitched voice, it would be more likely that they were anxious in some way. Whereas, if they were acting normally in other ways, it would be more likely that they close their eyes, while talking, naturallly.

Consider how they interact with other people

It would also help to consider how they interact with other people. If they seem to interact with you differently to how they interact with other people, it could be the case that you make them anxious in some way either due to attraction, your behavior or being in a position of superiority.

Consider the timing

It would also help to consider the timing of when they were closing their eyes. If they did it when they were talking to a group of people, it would be more likely to be due to some social anxiety. Whereas, if they did it when they were talking to you, it would be more likely to be that you were making them feel anxious or that they do it naturally.

Consider how they react when they see you

It would also help to consider what they do when they first see you. If you notice that they noticeably change their body language and behavior, when they first see you, it would be more likely that they have particular good or bad feelings about you.

If you notice that they do things such as:

  • Adjust their appearance and posture
  • Move closer to you
  • Uncross their arms
  • Make space for you

It would be more likely that they like you.

Whereas, if they do things such as:

  • Cross their arms
  • Avoid eye contact
  • Face away from you
  • Squint

It would be more likely that they have negative feelings towards you.
